The picture in the banner above, is of Ashley Moore at the opening ceremony for “Relay for Life in Anthem, Arizona 2012” on April 28th. She has changed drastically within the last few weeks due to this awful illness. As Ashley says “CANCER SUCKS”, and it does when you are watching your child that has a full life ahead of them battle such an ugly disease.
Ashley has been battling Astroystoma brain cancer stage 3 for 1 year and 6 months. Ashley is 12 years old who will be turning 13, on July 13th. This beautiful child has battled more than any child should ever have to face. During October of 2010, Ashley started having back and neck pains, in which the pain continued off and on throughout November and December of 2010. As of January 18th, 2011, Ashley was not feeling well and her eye sight was blurred. She became very sick that evening. January 21st, 2011, Ashley was experiencing severe head pain. As of January 22nd, Ashley had very blurred vision, in which she could not see. Ashley was immediately driven to Urgent Care and then sent to John C. Lincolns hospital. A CT scan was then performed. The scan showed that Ashley had a tumor on her brain and the spinal fluid was not draining properly, which was affecting areas in her neck and back causing her pain and discomfort. She was then transported to St. Joseph’s hospital, where they had inserted a drain tube in Ashley’s head. Emergency surgery was then performed on January 24th, 2011 to remove the tumor. They were able to remove a large portion of the tumor, however part of the tumor had spiked down into the brain stem.
Ashley was released from the hospital during the first week of February. She had started radiation and temodar chemo treatment in March of 2011. Through the month of September 2011, the MRI’s were clear. November 21st, another MRI was performed, which showed tumor growth. In December, Ashley went through many CT scans, MRI’s, etc. to ensure their findings from the MRI that was taken back in November. On December 29th, the news was revealed that the tumor was growing within the brain stem.
As of January of this year, the chemo treatments had changed and Ashley started taking Avastin and Irinotecan infusions every 14 days. On February 13th, Ashley was having head pain and was rushed down to Emergency. On February 15th, she had endoscopic third ventriculostomy surgery. After the surgery, Ashley was prescribed Cyclophoshamide Chemo, due to Avastin causing bleeding after surgery.
In May 2012, Ashley was put on a steroid as she was having difficulties with her speech. On May 31st, she started back on the Avastin and Irinotecan infusions. June 14th, Ashley was admitted into Phoenix Children's Hospital, due to her inability to talk and walk. The MRI showed a new lesion in the resection area in which they had previously removed the tumor, as well as more growth in the Thalamus/brain stem.
Ashley has lost feeling on her right side of her body and is unable to talk as of Monday, June 25, 2012. She is able to consume fluids and soft foods, but very small portions at one setting. Ashley is amazingly strong and is not giving up.

What can you do to help?
18 months of medical expenses has taken a toll on Ashley's family. As many of you know health insurance does not cover everything and deductibles add up. As the family attempts to investigate further treatment options for Ashley, many of these medical options have absorbent prices attached to them. Please consider donating to the family to help cover medical expenses and treatment. An account has been set up by We Care Anthem at MidFirst Bank in Anthem, AZ for this very purpose. Check out our Donate page for additional information.
